We have held numerous rallies and have been featured in the local paper. In August three of us were charged with disorderly conduct for chalking in our small town of Newport. This case is pending. This was covered by Fox 44 from Burlington (not sympathetically) as well as making the front page of the local newspaper. In July we held a Freecycle in Newport and on Sunday we held a free Community Picnic and Speakout. We are working to get a community bulletin board in our town. We participated with Occupy Central Vermont in poetry readings before the show at Bread and Puppet in Glover Vermont. There aren't very many of us. This is a small and very conservative area.
Open Letter to the People of Rhode Island:
Dear People of Rhode Island,
We the people of the Occupy Providence movement respectfully convey our intent to gather in Burnside Park on Saturday, October 15th at 5:00 pm and remain there for howsoever long it takes to build a society by, for, and of the people. Occupy Providence is a completely non-violent movement that seeks to give voice to the 99% of Rhode Islanders who have been disenfranchised as the economy and governance of our country has been increasingly ceded to powerful corporate interests.
The “occupation” of Burnside Park is an act of free speech which we feel compelled to resort to in order to have our voices heard. Occupy Providence will act with all due respect for the people and the property of the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island, and we intend to leave Burnside Park in better condition than we found it. Occupy Providence is inclusive for all people and families of all ages: drugs, alcohol, discrimination, harassment, and violent behavior are NOT WELCOME.
We welcome your support in our efforts to come to a consensus on how best to challenge corporate greed, which places profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality.
Occupy Providence is a SAFE SPACE:
*Occupy Providence is a completely non-violent movement; violence and property destruction/defacing are not welcome, and do not represent us.
*Discrimination or harassment based on race, sex, gender, orientation, age, or anything else are not welcome. This includes any sexist, homophobic, trans-phobic, racist, or ageist behavior, speech, chanting, writing, etc.
*We are a drug and alcohol free assembly and occupation. Cigarette smokers are asked to please smoke at a respectful distance from non-smokers.
We stand for a united society of equality, humanity and integrity of the pillar. In today's society, businesses and politicians held company, and those who suffer are the citizens. We want to strengthen the individual freedom and integrity in relation to businesses and current business practices. In our time, business methods become equivalent to driving over the individual in favor of corporate dividends, in our time used tax money to invest in venture capital funds, with profits going to private pockets, in our time, pensioners curtsy and say thanks for the crumbs from the table , in our day is young people absolutely last, only the strong survive, the rest make do as best they can. It is our job to remind people that they have real power, the politicians are really servants of the people, that those who govern do so with the people's best interests in mind, that an awakened population can not possibly be controlled by the few. We are many, we stand united, we are Occupy Helsingborg. Talk page in the forum
We don't really want to "occupy" Kingman, and we don't even have a tent city like some cities do... we are simply a non-partisan group of concerned citizens who intend to make a difference, starting right here in our local community
Occupy Susquehanna in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street Movement and occupations around the world is a NON-VIOLENT, non-partisan assembly that uses PEACEFUL protest and direct action to bring about substantive systemic change.
We resolve to remove the disproportionate influence of corporations and moneyed interests from the democratic process.
